Reference Number: PR171835, Press Release Issue Date: Aug 04, 2017

Specific teams set up to maintain tourism areas

Minister for Tourism Konrad Mizzi and Minister for the Environment, Sustainable Development, and Climate Change José Herrera announced the formation of a team of workers to maintain tourism areas, during a visit to Balluta.

Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi said that a team of twelve workers was now given the task of maintaining tourism areas in different regions. The Minister explained that the team was divided into three regional groups in order to maintain the North, Central, and South regions respectively. The teams have already been ongoing maintenance work for the past five weeks in several areas including Marsascala (Marsascala pool area), Balluta Square, Għadira promenade, and Marsaxlokk, and are currently working in other areas.

This opportunity arose to tackle the immediate need of maintenance in tourist areas and to ensure that Malta enhances its touristic product, said Minister Konrad Mizzi. In the particular area of Balluta, the central group carried out embellishment works and facelifted the area by repainting all metal equipment including sheds, cleaning the central fountain, and carrying out general maintenance on the site’s public benches. These teams are expected to increase in order to carry out further works in several tourist areas.

Minister for the Environment, Sustainable Development and Climate Change José Herrera remarked this inter-ministerial collaboration and stressed the importance of a healthy and maintained environment in Malta in order for the tourism industry to grow.

Minister Herrera said he intended to continue with the setting-up of ‘Ambjent Malta’, which will be the Environment Ministry’s implementation body so that his ministry has a more hands-on approach to the preservation and embellishment of the natural environment.
