Malta welcomes donation of 500,000 face masks from PRAUDE Asset Management Ltd

Minister for Foreign and European Affairs Evarist Bartolo and Parliamentary Secretary for Consumer Protection and Public Cleansing Deo Debattista welcomed a donation of 500,000 face masks from PRAUDE Asset Management Ltd, which is based in Malta with links to the Veneto region in Italy. The face masks, which were manufactured in Veneto, were brought to Malta thanks to the initiative of lawyer Dr Massimo Malvestio, chairman of PRAUDE Asset Management Ltd, with the cooperation of Malta's embassy to Italy, Air Malta, and officials within the Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs.

In a letter penned by the President of Veneto, Luca Zaia, he praised the gesture of Dr Malvestio, a fellow citizen of the region, as an important demonstration of how communities can and should assist each other in the fight against the spread of coronavirus, which knows no borders and no nationalities.

Minister Bartolo underlined the importance of global cooperation in the fight against this invisible but real and actual threat, most notably the importance of intraregional cooperation among countries of the Mediterranean neighbourhood. He also recalled that, a few days earlier, he had participated in a video-conference with EU Foreign Ministers, wherein he reiterated the need to work closely with and support Africa, and, more importantly, war-stricken Libya.

Parliamentary Secretary Deo Debattista explained that the Malta Medicines Authority, which will continue to distribute the face masks, is actively monitoring the evolving scenario related to COVID-19 and proactively addressing emerging medical needs. Through coordinated endeavours, the Medicines Intelligence and Access Unit, in collaboration with the health authorities, Foreign Affairs, and pharmaceutical distributors, is assisting in the sourcing and supply of medicines and medical devices to ensure continued availability of supplies for the benefit of Maltese citizens.

The face masks will be donated to local entities and authorities that require protective personal equipment to carry out their essential duties in the fight against the spread of the COVID-19.
