The Energy Performance Assessment for Enterprise scheme

This scheme supports enterprises in identifying opportunities to improve energy efficiency and reduce energy consumption. The scheme is available to enterprises with an average annual energy consumption of 10 TJ (2.78 GWh) or less, calculated over the previous three years. Unlike the previous Energy Audit Scheme for SMEs, which was limited by enterprise size, this scheme is open to enterprises of all sizes, including self-employed individuals. It is to note that eligibility is based solely on energy consumption and is divided into two categories:

  • Medium Consuming Enterprises – between 10TJ (2,780,000 kWh) and 0.5TJ (140,000 kWh) with both values included
  • Low Energy Consuming Enterprises – below 0.5TJ (140,000 kWh)

Eligible enterprises may receive a non-repayable grant towards the cost of carrying out an Energy Performance Assessment. The maximum grant available depends on the enterprise’s average annual energy consumption, as follows:

Average Annual Energy ConsumptionMaximum Grant
From 5 TJ (1.39 GWh) up to 10 TJ (2.78 GWh)€ 6,000
From 1 TJ (0.28 GWh) up to, but below, 5 TJ (1.39 GWh)€ 4,000
From 0.5 TJ (0.14 GWh) up to, but below, 1 TJ (0.28 GWh)€ 2,500

Applications may be submitted under either the De Minimis Regulation or the General Block Exemption Regulation (GBER), subject to the applicable eligibility requirements.

With respect to Low Energy Consuming Enterprises, these receive a fully funded Energy Performance Assessment service, delivered by a Certified Energy Auditor appointed by the Agency. The service has a value of €500 (for De Minimis reporting purposes) and includes:

  • An on-site visit to the enterprise’s premises.
  • A tailored assessment with recommendations to improve energy performance.
  • Consultation with the enterprise on identified energy efficiency opportunities.
  • Follow-up sessions, where required
