Purpose & Mandate

The Malta Tourism Authority Enforcement Board is entrusted with overseeing the regulatory and enforcement functions of the Authority, ensuring adherence to the Malta Travel and Tourism Services Act and associated regulations. The Board supports a compliance-first approach, enabling stakeholders to meet legal requirements through guidance and consultation, while reserving formal measures—such as fines or referrals to law enforcement—for serious or persistent breaches.

Core Responsibilities

  • Supervision of enforcement operations carried out by the MTA Enforcement Unit.
  • Authorisation of legal actions including issuance of fines, enforcement notices, police referrals, and guarantee withdrawals.
  • Oversight of stakeholder engagement to improve tourism services and regulatory frameworks.

Current Board Members

  • Chev Anthony C. Coleiro – Chairperson
  • Dr Tiffany Ann Attard – Member
  • Mr Johann Mula – Member
  • Dr Marita Pace Dimech – Secretary

How It Functions

The Enforcement Unit is empowered to undertake legal action when all other avenues of achieving compliance have been exhausted or when there are substantial risks to tourist safety or Malta’s tourism image. Methods include issuing administrative fines, enforcement directives, coordinating with police authorities, and managing timeshare-related guarantees. Engagement with industry stakeholders allows the MTA to refine enforcement policies and safeguard service quality while remaining responsive to market dynamics.
